Chief Emmanuel Ighomena is the deputy chairman of People’s Democratic Party in Delta State. He also represented Ethiope West local government area in the state House of Assembly. In this interview with SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Sam Akadoro at Oghara, he speaks on the challenges of his office since he became the number two man in his party in Delta State. Excerpts:
What are your challenges as the PDP deputy chairman in Delta State?
You will agree with me that Delta Central senatorial district has not done well in previous elections. Delta central PDP has not done well, except for when I assumed the office of the deputy chairman in the state. I looked like someone my party had rejected. But today you will agree with me that the situation has been proven wrong; Delta central is PDP and PDP is Delta central. We have been able to turn around the failure of the party in this senatorial district and now we are very comfortable. It has been my challenge right from when I assumption office as deputy chairman of the party, to have come from a senatorial district where the party was not doing well. But now, the party is now doing well. The challenge has been controlled. If this interview had come earlier, I would have said it was a challenge ahead of me.
Did you do this alone; who helped to change the party scenario in the state?
We were able to best the challenge working together with the deputy governor, the party chairman in the state, the party chairman in Delta south, and other eminent personalities in the party. We were able to bring them together, work together and PDP is victorious. Our victory here is overwhelming. You can see the gap between PDP and every other party; 2PDP did not just take the first position but took all the top positions. That apart, our achievement could also be seen in the light of how we were able to bring back aggrieved party members; of course, many defected because of anger. What Delta central did was to throw away the baby along the bathing water.
What is the magic wand of this victory?
The truth is that when you have an issue, you have to trace the genesis of that issue. When you deal with that, the cause of the problem, you would have been able to put behind that problem.
People were angry and some left the party. We were able to talk to them to forget about the past and come back to their party. Issues that made them run away from the party have been addressed and are still being addressed. The leadership of the party in the state, led by the governor, his deputy and all those that matter in the party, including the state party chairman, they all worked together for us to achieve that victory. I want to thank the Delta State governor for the role he played in ensuring that we had a free, fair and hitch-free primary election where the candidate that has now emerged and became the senator was elected. The governor played a major role, because everybody thought it was going to be the beginning of another war in the party, instead of becoming a point to war about, it has joined us stronger to enable us put behind our differences and we have come out victorious.
The governor did the magic, the deputy too, the chairman of the party in the state and all stakeholders of the party at this time took the call, a call by the leadership of the party to take the party to the next level.
