Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), a non governmental organization and promoter of Family Planning, has taken its campaign for child spacing to the mosque in Edo State, soliciting the assistance of the Chief Imam of Benin, Alhaji Abudul Fatai Enabuele, and other top Muslim leaders to educate their members on the importance of family planning.

NURHI Advocacy Group Chairman/Project Manager, Alhiaji Adekunle Yusuf, and Edo State Team Leader, Mrs. Adetoke Akinbami, in their separate presentation at the Benin Central Mosque pointed out that NURHI’s mission to the mosque was to appeal to the Chief Imam to assist the organization in sensitizing the Muslim faithful on the need to fully embrace and support family planning services.

The objectives of NURHI, according to them, include increasing modern contraceptive prevalence rate by at least 20 per cent across the country, especially among the urban poor. They expressed confidence that if parents become knowledgeable enough to access family planning services in health centres and adequately produce the number of children they can cater for, it would go a long way to reducing maternal and child mortality rate to the barest minimum as well as promote safe motherhood.

The chief Imam of Benin, Alhaji Abudul: Fatai Enabuele, in his response, commended the Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) for its invaluable roles and efforts at educating parents on the important of family planning and child spacing.

Enabulele described NURHI initiative to educate the muslim Community and create awareness about family planning services in all the health centres as a welcome development and promised to spread the campaign and message on the benefits of family planning across to all muslims in the state.
