The Police in Delta State have arrested some bank officials and the police escort of their vehicle believed to have forced a heavy duty vehicle off the road before it ran into a pregnant woman along Udu road, near Warri on Monday.
The bank officials and their police escort were said to be driving against traffic when the accident occurred.
The pregnant woman whose two legs were broken on impact and whose identity could not be ascertained was rushed to a nearby hospital before being taken to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara for medical attention.
Her condition could not be ascertained as at press time but eyewitness said she was in critical condition.
Briefing newsmen on Tuesday, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Alkali Baba Usman said that the Policemen and bank officials had been arrested for reckless driving against traffic.
The Commissioner of Police, who spoke at the Police Area Command Headquarters in Warri, said that “it is an offence for anybody to drive against traffic. The bank officials, the policemen involved have been arrested and they would be charged appropriately”.
The Commissioner of Police who also paraded 35 alleged cultists and four robbers said that three armed robbers/kidnappers were seriously wounded during a raid on their hideout.
He said that items recovered from the suspects included 11 cartridges of live ammunition, two buses, one polo shirt with the inscription “N.B.M” (Noe Black Movement), one Aye Confraternity vest, a bangle, a cap with cowries and three Aye Confraternity black berets, adding that the alleged cultists belonged to the Aye and Black Axe cults.
Commissioner Alkali Usman advised youths to shun cultism and embrace more meaningful endeavours and appealed to well meaning residents of Warri and Delta state to support the police and other security agencies with useful and timely information on criminals and their activities, noting that such collaboration are necessary instrument for effective control of crime in the society.
