A nongovernmental organization (NGO), Respite and Support for Diabetics and Hypertensive Initiative (RSDHI) has organised a free blood sugar and blood pressure test for over 1000 residents of Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State even as it promised to extend the tests to other towns, villages across Delta State and the country in general.
Speaking during the tests, Mr. Austin Oghoferuo Desi, a Consultant to RSDHI, said that the NGO which was incorporated in the United Kingdom in 2009 and later in Nigeria in 2011 was established to assist people that suffered from diabetics or hypertension as well as preserve and protect their health.
He said, “The NGO is aimed at relieving people of sickness and preserve and protect good health of those who have diabetics or suffer from hypertension and those with weight problems by setting up respite centres equipped with qualified and diagnostic testing equipments.”
He added that the centre also aimed to “advance education of the public in diabetics and hypertensive related conditions and provide details of treatment and the importance of diet and exercise; and to fulfil such other purposes as may from time to time be recognised as practices and mobilise communities for a healthier environment and good hygienic practices”.
He said that many people had died from diabetes and hypertension complications caused by lack of knowledge and good management of the condition, adding that the programme sought to expose participants to the prevention and management of the conditions.
The incorporated trustees of the NGO include Mrs. Rhoda Okeoghene Otomewo, a pharmacist; Mr. Austin Oghoferuo Desi, management consultant; Dr. Amabetare Biu, consultant Paediatrician; Abolade Adenekan, chartered accountant and Dr. Sylvester Obiechie Nzekwue, area manager.
