Group faults demolition of billboards in Uyo

By Idongesit Ashameri  / Special Correspondent, Uyo

Outdoor practitioners under the aegis of the Coalition of Outdoor Practitioners have insisted that the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) has no authority to destroy existing outdoor billboards in the state capital.

In a letter to Governor Godswill Akpabio titled “Unlawful Removal of our Billboards and Other Outdoor Structures by UCCDA,” signed by Mr. Aniekan Ekpo, the coalition said its members are greatly distressed by the activities of the authority in the destruction of billboards and other outdoor advertisement structures.

It said the action portrays the state administration as practicing double standard.

The coalition recalled that by a newspaper advertisement of Monday, January 31, 2005, the state government clearly outlined procedures to be adopted to create outdoor advertisement structures in the state which its members all complied with.

It expressed shock that the agency is now dismantling billboards lawfully erected by members of the coalition under the guidelines given them by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and its consultant, De Mbarukas Limited.

“The highhandedness of UCCDA in destroying billboards that the state government had approved is not only unconstitutional but also reflects infighting between the agency and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources which should not be vented on our structure,” the letter stated.

The Coalition further said the “Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution rests the power to control and regulate outdoor advertisement hoarding (billboards) in the local government councils,” claiming that the power of Attorney was signed by the 31 local government councils of the state ratifying the appointment of a state consultant (in this case De Mbarukas) on Outdoor Advertisement and Allied Matters considering the supremacy of the constitution, UCCDA, a creation of the state law, cannot usurp or assign to itself a function whereby assigned by the constitution.

The coalition, therefore, called on the state governor to curb the excesses of UCCDA by calling them to order and making for a restitution of the damages already done and equally took a swipe at UCCDA for destroying road pavement and other structures aside billboard.

“The wantonness in the destruction is mind boggling. If the destruction of billboards was UCCDA’s aim, why destroy the trees planted by the Ministry to provide shade in the wake? Why destroy the new pavement that were constructed at enormous cost?” the letter further stated.

The coalition, which has taken the matter to court, further said the UCCDA is acting more like a destruction authority than a development authority, and “wondered why UCCDA is undertaking this destruction to sensitize/clean up the state which is the function of the Ministry of Environment.”

Unravelling killers of lawyers in Delta

Continued from Friday

By Harris-Okon Emmanuel  / Correspondent, Warri

Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP, Ikechukwu Aduba, has absolved the command of involvement in the matter. The police boss had also in another statement; declared five persons were wanted in connection with the lawyers’ killings.

The suspected killers included Kelvin, who is standing trial in Abuja over his gang’s bloody armed confrontation with security forces in Kokori, Ethiope East Council of Delta.

Oji also added that the NBA was informed a week ago that Ogaga Enueme, one of the kidnap suspects in respect of whom the murdered lawyers filed application, was killed on same day (March 27) as the lawyers,.

His words: “The police account is that he was being taken to court with another suspect when they were ambushed and attacked by armed men, who engaged them in a shootout, which left one of the suspects dead.

“From the facts, we see a clear direct connection between the two incidents, especially as they occurred same day. It is no coincidence.

“I saw the release by the CP. It is very unfortunate they came up with such statements even before commencement of investigation. From the scenario of this case, both while it was in court and the death of one of the suspects in police custody, the police have questions to answer. Investigation must start from them.

He added, “Incidentally, when two of our colleagues were killed the bodies we understood were discovered by policemen guiding the location. So, we can say that the bodies were discovered. But in case of the suspect, he died in police custody, so the policemen should answer for what transpired and what happened.

“If we are convinced as we are that the two incidents are related, then tackling the killing of the suspect will be in a way involve unravelling the murder of our colleagues. So, the police cannot at this stage where, to my mind, possibilities are still on board come out to absolve self of blame. Let them go and conduct investigation first.

“We shall send a petition to the National Human Rights Commission asking for thorough investigation into the incident. We have contracted the NBA President, Okey Wali (SAN), who forwarded a petition to the Inspector General of Police asking him to take over the case.”

Former NBA president, Chief Thompson Okpoko (SAN), said the body was aggrieved that lawyers were being killed for doing their jobs.

“We are aggrieved. For people to be killed because of the job they do is like killing people because of their belief.”

Police rebuttal

The state Commissioner of Police, in s statement released by Celestina Kalu, a deputy superintendent of police, who is the police public relations officer (PPRO), the police said it was not behind the killings.

“Against insinuations being bandied in some quarters that the police are behind the crime; the command has continuously strived to maintain and adhere to the rule of law by trying as much as possible to be dispassionate in the enforcement of our duties and not delve into the arena of conflicts howsoever.’’

Aduba statement further said that two suspects connected with the Ozoro High Court trial of the kidnap of the Delta SSG’s son were killed in a police shootout with alleged hoodlums with a team of police while leading the suspects to the court.

“While taking two self confessed suspected kidnappers/armed robbers to Ozoro for arraignment; along Ogwashi-Uku/Kwale Road, precisely at Edo-Ogwashi axis of the road, the police escort team ran into an ambush, wherein some hoodlums suspected to be the gang members of the arrested suspects riddled the two vehicles conveying the police and the suspects with bullets.

“That the escort team put up a good defence during which the two suspects, in a heated gun duel, suffered fatal gunshots while one of the police escort team suffered serious bullet wounds and is currently hospitalised.

“While we deeply regret the gruesome murder of the two ministers in the temple of justice, a crack team of detectives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, Asaba, had been constituted to unravel the mystery behind the sordid act”, the police further stated.

Uduaghan’s olive branch

Governor Uduaghan, disturbed by the killing of the lawyers, has given the assurance that the masterminds would be fished out to face the music and called for NBA’s cooperation and support.

The governor, who commiserated with families of the deceased and the NBA over the killing of the two lawyers, promised that the state would do a thorough job on the matter.

Ikimi’s findings and conclusion

Some of their colleagues who are into human rights activism, such as Oghenejabor Ikimi, among others had conducted private inquests into the matter with a view to getting to its roots.

For instance, on April 1, members of the Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence (FJHD) in conjunction with the Centre for the Vulnerable and the Underprivileged (CENTREP) led by Ikimi,  reportedly conducted a private inquiry into the case. The team visited the High Court of Justice, Ozoro, office of the zonal head, Ministry of Justice, Ozoro, and the police station, Ozoro, respectively to get gather evidence.

According to Ikimi and his team, there are three theories to the assassinations case. The first theory is that the Delta Police Command is culpable in the murders, particularly in the way and manner they were professionally coordinated and executed. The police have since debunked this theory.

Secondly, Vincent Macaulay, the younger brother to the Secretary to the Delta State Government whom Eguonor-Dafiaghor,  had on  February 12 accused in court of threatening his life, was also fingered. However, the theory has since been long rebutted by I.F. Ifenedo, counsel holding watching brief for the actual complainant in Suit No: HCZ/9C/2013 THE STATE VS. SUNDAY UGBEBO & ANOR before Justice O.A. Onojovwo on the said date in open court.

Thirdly, the remnants of Kelvin’s group could be responsible for the assassinations in a bid to covering up some secrets about the group known to the lawyers in the course of the said case and the suspects (Ogaga Enueme and Efe Edeki).   The theory has also been dismiss as a fallacy.

Ikim, however advised members of the public to shun rumour mongering and to give useful and vital information to the police that could assist in unmasking the killers of the lawyers.

Besides, he called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately launch a comprehensive and an impartial investigation into the assassinations and execution of Eguonor-Dafiaghor and Ekuwangji on the one hand and Ogaga Enueme and Efe Edeki on the other, saying Nigerians were tired of the numerous cases of unresolved murders that have bedevilled the nation and her people.

FMC Asaba drags workers to Industrial Court over strike

By Felix Igbekoyi /  Asaba

To ensure that workers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, resumed at their duty posts, management of the centre has dragged the workers to the Industrial Court over the current strike action.

The workers embarked on the strike action about two weeks ago, paralyzing activities in all the sections of the hospital and insisting that their salaries that were slashed should be restored to the full since management was responsible for their failure to comply with the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The workers last Thursday however thronged the hospital to participate on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), scheduled to capture them for subsequent monthly salaries owing to the advertisement by the management. The case instituted with Suit No.NICN/AK/12/2014, filed at the National Industrial Court, Akure, Ondo State, is between the Board of Management and two others versus Dr N.L. Orhue and 15 others, and management is seeking to restrain the workers from going on strike.  When Daily Independent visited the hospital, hundreds of the workers were at the premises as early as 9am for the exercise which later commenced about 3.30pm. Public Relations Officer (PRO) of JOHESU, Davidson Akinlaya, confirmed that the IPPIS capture.

He said the workers were not happy with management as the money they could have used to settle workers welfare was diverted to litigation, adding that despite the IPPIS capture, workers would not resume until their salaries are paid in full. He also warned that management contemplation of “no work, no pay” policy will not work as it never helped matters.

Nigerian military can defeat Boko Haram –Jackrich

Ambassador Sobomabo Jackrich is from Kalabari in Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. An ex-agitator, he is the principal of Egberipapa Leadership Foundation, which gave birth to the Network for Defence of Democracy and Good Governance (NDDGG) and Kengema Unity Forum (KUF). He has received several awards for his service to his people and the nation.

In this chat with Copy Editor Peter Ekanem, he speaks on second term for President Goodluck Jonathan; his assessment of the security challenges facing the country and how government has responded so far.

He also speaks on how Nigeria can control the influx of illegal aliens into the country among other issues. Excerpts:

What is your take on second term for  President Goodluck Jonathan?

I don’t see anything wrong in the president going  for re-election. We all have ambitions but there are parameters for us to measure; what qualifies an individual for re-election.  So, if I may ask, has the president performed very well? If the answer is yes, then what are we talking about? The Transformational Agenda of Mr. President speaks volumes. For a country to develop all the sectors of the economy, you will agree with me that four years is not enough to correct the ills of over 50 years; the government will need to formulate policies and make laws whereby creating an enabling environment for the economy to thrive. That is why the constitution allows for a second term making it eight years in office and I believe with eight years any focused leader like Mr. President will be able to lay a good foundation for the economic transformation and industrialisation of the country so that the next administration can build on that foundation.

How will you rate Jonathan’s administration in terms of   delivery of good governance?

I rate this administration 90 per cent, which is excellent. We have seen massive roads construction and rehabilitation; nine new universities have been established to address admission challenges; our local and international airports now have a new look. What about power and the revamping of the railway system; the almajiri schools, the Second Niger Bridge that the foundation was laid recently. One must not forget the rule of law; in fact, the list is endless; the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President deserves accolade as it cuts across all the geo-political zones of the country.

What is your assessment of the security challenges and how government has responded so far?

The issue of insecurity is not peculiar to Nigeria; it was not manufactured by the present administration. One will agree with me that it is a global situation but to us in Nigeria it’s new. We have never experienced it like this but the achievements of the government to me is under publicised and the media have helped the terrorists group more by publicising their activities which is their trade to instill fear in the people. But I can assure you that the security apparatuses are working and that is why most of us can sleep with our eyes close and go about our business. So, I think the situation is not as hopeless as many will want to make it look. Nigeria will surmount the challenges.

What are your fears about Jonathan’s presidency?

Instead of expressing my fears, I will say a prayer that God should not allow disgruntled politicians infiltrate President Jonathan’s camp and cause disunity that will destroy the hard work of our president. I know that President Jonathan loves this country passionately and wants to make sure it grows and takes its rightful place in the global community. But I cannot speak for everyone around him.

Do you foresee rebellion in Nigeria and how do you see to the prediction that Nigeria may likely disintegrate?

I don’t foresee rebellion; Nigerians are civilised and better informed and as for disintegration been predicted by the U.S., it would have been a food for thought but for the prompt response of Mr. President in convening the National Conference, which will enable all ethnic groups as well as stakeholders iron out issues that are militating against our unity. With this development I believe that different issues will be addressed and Nigerians will forge ahead as a strong indivisible entity.

How do we control the influx of illegal aliens into the country and boost government war against insurgents?

We need a holistic approach in checkmating our porous borders to curb the uncontrolled influx of illegal immigrants. The immigration and other related agencies should step up their game by organising a proper database of all immigrants; periodic investigations should be   made about their business dealings and financial transactions. Proper checks should be made before granting visas into Nigeria like it is obtainable in the U.S. and other developed countries. We also need state of the art border control surveillance equipment and lastly the national identity card scheme should be used to create a database for all Nigerians so that security operatives can carry out investigation on individual thoroughly, if some of these measures are put in place, it will boost the war against insurgents.

How would you advise the Federal Government on steps to take against members of the Boko Haram sect? Should international peace keeping force be involved in this fight against Boko Haram?

The fight against Boko Haram is complex in nature; it can be likened to guerrilla warfare, and this is why we need a lot of intelligence gathering. I believe that is what the security apparatus is engaged in; these individuals live in the midst of the people; they don’t have special looks whereby you can identify them. It takes me back to my previous response on our porous borders. The federal government needs to tighten the security in our borders; as for international peacekeeping force to be part of this fight it is uncalled for; the Nigerian military are capable of dismantling Boko Haram.

APC: Tribunal upholds withdrawal of counter-affidavit

By Francis Onoiribholo  / Bureau Chief Benin

The Local Government Election Appeal Tribunal sitting in Benin City has upheld the withdrawal of the counter-affidavit earlier deposed to by counsel to the All Progressive Congress (APC), Ken Mozia (SAN), and consequently struck it out in the interest of fairness and equity.

When the two cases with Appeal NO.ED/LG/APP/TRI/15/14 and NO.ED/LG/APP/TRI.11/ 14 already slated for rulings were mentioned, counsel to the 2nd and 3rd respondents/Applicants, Ken Mozia (SAN) came with a motion filed and served on the 1st cross appellant/applicant (John E. Yakubu) seeking the leave of the court to withdraw the affidavit earlier deposed to as counsel, citing “Broad line Enterprises Limited against Monterey Maritme Operation & ors.”

In a swift objection, counsel to 1st and 2nd appellant, Chief Ighodalo Imadegbelo (SAN), and Chief Fred Orbih (SAN) leading Kingsley Obamogie Esq and others averred that the withdrawal of the counter affidavit by the 1st respondent counsel was tantamount to the arrest of the ruling of the court which ought to have been delivered, saying it was a process alien to the Nigeria legal jurisprudence.

The SAN further cited “Ukachukwu vs PDP,” “Shettima vs Goni,” Newswatch Communication Limited vs Attah,” “Bob Manuel vs Briggs.”

He stated that the notice of withdrawal was now incompetent as argument had been taken and therefore urged the court to rule on the matter.

Chief Imadegbelo (SAN) adduced further that it was cardinal in the administration of justice that after argument concluded their ruling follows, especially as the parties have reached the point of “Latis Contantacio,” citing the case of “Nnajaifor vs Ukonu,” “Oguntayo vs Adelaya.”

On his part, counsel to the 2nd appellant (PDP) Chief Fred Orbih (SAN) adopted the submission of Chief Imadegbelo, even as he said the withdrawal of the counter affidavit at this stage was contrary to Section 36 of the Constitution which deals on fair – hearing, describing it as amounting to academic exercise.

In his reply on point of law, Ken Mozia (SAN) said there was no application filed to arrest the court ruling, just as he pointed out that notice to withdraw was not an application.

He also submitted that Section 36 does not arise in the matter, as he regarded the submission of Imadegbelo (SAN) as not applicable on the matter.

Meanwhile, counsel to the 1st appellant/respondent, Rasaq Isenalumhe Esq remained indifferent to the contended issue as it did not affect his case.

Having listened to their submission, the Tribunal took a short break and thereafter came out with their rulings that the counter-affidavit be withdrawn and consequently struck the suit.

Justice Ikponmwen then adjourned the case till today for hearing on the motion against two judges in the panel.

The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Noble Lady Valerie Ebe, has applauded the self-sacrificing spirit of Governor Godswill Akpabio as shown in the rapid transformation through visible, touchable and life-changing projects.

Ebe who said thïs in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent expressed satisfaction that Akpabio, unlike some of his contemporaries in other states actually sank in the money accruing to the state to development.

“His selfless spirit really touches my heart because most leaders think first about themselves, families and the savings they have overseas, stressing, they don’t think about what they                                                                                                                                              should really sink into the land they govern, when money comes. “There are Leaders who take this money; some would hide it somewhere outside the country; but my principal sinks the money back into the state.  That is why you see all the developments, people coming from within and outside Nigeria to say that Akwa Ibom State has an uncommon transformation.  “He does uncommon work for the state and as a result of that, God’s blessing comes to the state”.

To succeed as deputy governor working with a selfless governor like Akpabio therefore, Ebe pledged continued support to the administration she is part of by encouraging the governor’s innovations and programmes in addition to mobilizing women to pray for the success of the present administration.

“When you work closely with your principal, understand his problems, move alone with him, and try make him succeed, you become very successful.  But when you speak from both sides of your mouth and don’t really support the person who asked you to be his deputy, you will never succeed. I feel  I’m succeeding because I support my Governor and I try to make him succeed because if he does not succeed I cannot consider myself as successful because good leadership begets good followership.

“If you are not a good follower, you cannot be a good leader. You learn from what you see your principal do, most of the good things thát he does and you make him succeed in those things; you will surely succeed as a follower. And eventually, you will imbibe those good qualities that are in him; you are studying what he is doing and you are also trying to lend a helping hand in those good things that he does”

“Most importantly, you are not jealous of him because it seems other deputies quarrel with their principals, they don’t move along well and as such they stop half-way. I don’t believe I will stop halfway because I really believe in the person I am working with and each day I pray for his success.”

Ebe therefore advised the people of Akwa Ibom to appreciate the governor, the government and what the governor is doing.

For Akporiaye: A tribute

By Sam Akadoro

Special Correspondent, Sapele

Essayist and poet John Donne in one of his numerous poems said, “Delta be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful but thou art not so for those whom thou thickest thou dost destroy… One short sleep past shall wake eternally and death shall be no more, Death thou shall die.”

One of the many tributes that showered on the late Barrister Nawe Eric Akporiaye, who departed the so-called sinful world, was that of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State. Uduaghan, who was said to have flown in from Abuja because of the burial ceremony, lauded the life of late Akporiaye, which he described as that of appreciation and worth emulation by all.

According to the governor, “l appreciate and celebrate with the family of the Akporiaye for Barrister Name Eric Akporiaye reaching the age of 93 years before the end of his earthly sojourn.” He said his relationship with the Akporiaye family started when he met his colleague in the medical profession, Dr. Leslie Akporiaye, whom he described as a thorough professional and a dependable medical doctor the then Eku Baptist Hospital at Eku. He said that seeing and being attended to by Dr. Akporiaye was the journey of any patent to his or_ her recovery from the sickness, describing the coming of Dr. Akporiaye _to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara, as redeeming. Uduaghan noted that without his professional and managerial skill, all the breaking through and acknowledgement the teaching hospital had got worldwide would not be possible. The governor added that the late Barrister Akporiaye lived a life of dedication and professional not just for his children, pointing out that the late Akporiaye represented the generation of Warri indigenes, who lived in unity, adding that the relationship between the Urhobo and ltsekiri was marvelous and the phrase “Warri boys and girls” was acclaimed. He said that it was necessary for the indigenes of Warri to cooperate and collaborate with government so that the infrastructure development going on is sustained.

Reverend Justine C. Okoroje of the First Baptist Church, Warri, and the chairman the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Warri South Local Government Area, described late Barrister Akporiaye as a man of principle and destiny. Okoroje, at the service of songs at Akporiaye’s residence at Upper Erejuwa Toad, Warri, said though Akporiaye was not alive but people were testifying about his goodness, noting that as they were celebrating a man who impacted positively on the lives of the people, he admonished them to tailor their lives according to the ways of Jesus Christ.

Okoroje said that life is temporary and there is the need to recognise the essence of life, which he said is to know Jesus as the Lord and Saviour, adding that with Jesus in our lives, we can impact positively in society.

In his sermon entitled “River of life” at the First Baptist Church, Warri, Okporoje said for man to grow plant, take care of cattle, he needs water and for man to settle in any place, he prefers where there is water, adding that the water of God is a very precious means for the transformation, healing, divine intervention and for the grace of God. He noted that the Bible says in John 10: 10 the thief comes to steal and kill… but God said that man would have life in abundance in Him. Okporoje said that men need Jesus in their lives, particularly inNigeria so that the maladies besetting the country can be overcome. He said that Jesus is the hope of man and will not disappoint when you call on Him. “Your greatest decision is to give your life to Jesus,” he concluded.

In numerous tributes, the children of Lawyer Akporaiye poured out their hearts to him. They described him in a superlative language and commended his style of mentorship.  For Dr. Leslie Akporiaye, his father was an epitome of a private person, a charming gentle man, a conscientious and principled lawyer and a secret English man.  According to Dr. Akporiaye, these characteristics governed his relationship people, his children and family members. “He avoided possible involvement in other people’s lives always with the explanation that you should make your own choices; I craved mentoring from him, that did me good because I am self-reliant.” Dr. Akporiaye, who is the Chief Medical Director of the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara, Delta State, said his father was a charming gentleman to everyone, always courteous, non-confrontational, polite and a willing mentor. He added that when he graduated from the medical college and sought his father’s advice, he told him to work diligently at his profession to guarantee successful life and self-esteem, stating that keeping that advice has been an obsession with him. He pointed out that he remembered his father’s boat trips to picnics in Escravos, the bird hunting on the way to do cases at Akure, Kwale, Oleh and rememberedbeing taught how to knot a tie and his introduction to the wolf cubs and boys scouts and the camping trips in Enerhen village.   “Growing up and listening to BBC news and comedy shows with him on his radio on lazy Sunday mornings, even though I did not quite get the British accent; eating those un-African British foods like cornflakes, banana fritter, wheat, and spaghetti for the first time; they were all acquired tastes at the time but I have gotten to love them,” he said.

Dr. Akporiaye said watching his father eat was a treat, adding that “his gusto for a good meal prepared by my mother was unmatched especially when it contained lot of meat, the trait has since been passed on to his children and grand children”, at _adding that he could have been a judge several times over but was _unwilling to sell his soul for it. He said that his father made_ this trait the core of his existence and inculcated it in his _children, hence he is very grateful and proud. __

Violet E. Awotwi, who went poetic entitled her tribute “To a great man, a loving father and my best friend”, waxed “I thought about you with love today … unknown, I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new, I thought about you yesterday before that too, I think of you in silence, I often speak your name_all I have are memories and your picture in frame.”

Narrating her experience, she said that she woke in the morning of January 29 and felt an urgent need to call her sister who asked, “Did anyone call you” she asked and immediately knew that the news was bad, the news about her dad’s death though not unexpected after many years of ill health hit her like a ton of bricks.  She pointed out that while growing up she had a close relationship with her father and got closer after his accident, adding that _she was blessed to know him in ways few people ever did. She said that her father was her confidant and friend always listening, supporting and teaching. She said that she talked about everything to him and did not matter time of the day. She said he was always there for her and according to her, the frequency of her calls lessened as his health grow worse and gradually the father she knew eventually faded away, adding her heart ached when she imagined her father health condition.        Awotwi stated further,’’my father worked hard in his entire life and always put in 100 per cent in his work. This was one of  the most important lessons I learnt from him, he taught me to be self-reliant and to work hard on my dreams, not counting on material things for happiness.” She said that her dad was a gentle and considerate soul with a sense of humour, “he was gentle and reserved, he had a_ distant and serious side that sometime kept those around him at a distance,” she added.

She said her father had better way of ensuring discipline with his silent treatment of people which was more effective than beating anyone, ending the tribute with a poem entitled,“ A limb has fallen by unknown.“

Other children who paid tributes were Roger, Alero, Omagan, etc.

After 15 years of operations from various rented buildings, the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated committees to oversee construction of a permanent office complex within the next 12 months.

Inuagurating the Finance and Building committees on Thursday, the state Chairman of PDP, Obong Paul Ekpo, said the decision to have a permanent office complex was in line with the scriptural injunction at 2Samuel 7:10 that God’s people wïll dwell in a place of their own. Ekpo therefore called on members of the committees of Finance and Building headed by Mr.

Don Etim and Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, respectively to brace themselves up and approach the project with speed.

Enumerating the responsibilities of the Finance Committee, Ekpo said, “the committee will embark on fund raising activities and solicitations for the party, provided that such activities and solicitations must be in comformity with the existing laws, establish business ventures that do not violate the provision of the constitution and organise a state chairman’s Annual fund Raising Dinner at which participants shall pay according to sitting arrangement”.

The Building Committee, according to the state chairman, shall: “Initiate and supervise mobilization of men and materials to site, ensure building and completion of the party’s state secretariat within the stipulated time and periodically brief the state Exco on the progress of the project”.

He expressed optimism that with the men and women of integrity selected to work in both committees, the dream to accord the party that has done so much for the state interms of visible and touchable life-touching projects, a befitting permanent accommodation will soon be translated to reality.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Finance Committee and Commissioner for Works, Mr. Don Etim, considered need for a permanent office complex for Akwa Ibom PDP as long overdue and pledged to work as a team to finance the project with both cash and kind.

Emmanuel Enoidem, Commissioner for Special Duties, who is the Chairman of the Building Committee regretted that the party could not secure a permanent place to transact its businesses after 15 years of very active existence in the state and pledged to take it as a duty with grave indulgence.

Transport fares in Delta remained stable in spite of the rush to travel during the Easter festivities.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the situation in some motor parks in the state capital, Asaba, on Monday, observed that transport fares did not change in spite of the Easter celebration.

Some transport operators in Asaba, who spoke to NAN, said they had no reason to increase fares because the price of fuel had not changed in the last one month.

James Aroture of Kwale Park said: “We have no reason to increase our charges because of the Easter celebration when the price of petrol is still between N97 and N110.’’

Oke Emuobo of Ughelli/ Kwale Park said: ‘’our fares did not change because we still charge N850 for smaller cars from Asaba to Ughelli, while from Asaba to Kwale, we still collect N600’’.

Igho Avbiagba of Delta Line Transport Services also said: ‘’the Easter celebration did not affect our fares because pump price of petrol has not changed.

‘’ For instance, from Asaba to Warri, we still charge N1, 200 for cars, while from Asaba to Ughelli, we charge N650 for buses.’’

NAN also reports that short distances within Asaba still go for between N30 to N50 per drop, while longer trips still go for between N50 and N100.

Overhaul security apparatus now, group urges Jonathan

Bureau Chief, Benin

President Goodluck Jonathan has been called upon to urgently embark on total overhaul of the existing security agencies in the country if he is actually poised to end the blood letting being perpetrated by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

The call is coming on the heels of claims by the military, through its Director of Information, Brigadier General, Chris Olukolade, that 121 of the 129 abducted female students had been freed by a combined civilian Joint Task Force, (JTF).

The pressure group, South-South Mandate, based in Benin, in a release jointly signed by its President Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, and secretary, Mathew Edaghase, at the weekend, also lampooned the military authority for giving out information to Nigerians that is “anchored on falsehood” over kidnapped students of Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.

While describing as an embarrassment and a mockery of the nation’s security system, the group declared:  “this is a monumental embarrassment and the world would be mocking Nigeria if the military high command can come out in broad day light that they have rescued the girls and even gave figures and quoted the numbers and went ahead to say one terrorist was killed.”

“It was clear that they lied when the parents demanded to see their children coupled with the school principal’s rebuttal. The question is that, why on earth should a military command give information anchored on falsehood? At a time we are facing serious security challenges, it shows how terribly we have sunk as a nation.

“The other day, I watched how Doyin Okupe tried to castigate Leadership Newspapers over its editorial that Nigeria was a failed state and that was the same period the military command could take the whole nation on a ride to lay claim to feats that they never had. If a nation has not failed I don’t see why the lie?”

Cleric tasks Jonathan on insurgency

President Goodluck Jonathan has been called upon to use maximum force in his arsenal to quell the rising wave of insurgency and other security threats in the country or Nigeria may soon slide into anarchy.

General Overseer of God’s Ministry International, also known as God’s Ministry of Healing and Deliverance, Samson Mamamu, made the call on Sunday during the Easter service in his church in Salvation City, New Ogbe-Ijoh in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The evangelist advised the Federal Government to make ending the insurgency perpetrated by Boko Haram in the country a top priority on its agenda to end the needless loss of lives and continued spilling of blood, as, according to him, Boko Haram,  has become a “national thorn on our national flesh”.

Speaking on the ongoing National Conference, Mamamu said if the National Assembly was not involved, the exercise was bound to fail just like  similar  ones before it.

“The picture the Spirit of God is pointing to the fact that we have a number of republics or zones in the country with a very weak centre thus allowing for resource control which could be a temporary solution to our problem”.

In his Easter message on the 10 appearances of Jesus after His resurrection, taken from the books of John, Matthew, Mark, Luke and I Corinthians, the evangelist listed how Christ had appeared unto Mary Magdalene, the 11 disciples less Judas Iscariot, Peter, James, 500 brethren in Galilee, Paul and others.

Ndokwa demands restitution over marginalisation

The President General, Ndokwa National Union (NNU), Paul Enebeli, has vowed that his people will demand restitution from the Federal Government over marginalisation of the area.

Enebeli, who is a delegate representing the South-South in the ongoing National Conference, in an interview, said the Ndokwa people are so marginalised with nothing to show for the wealth the Federal Government is tapping from their soil, stating that seeking restitution will be one of the ways forward for his people.

According to him, the deliberate neglect of the people by the Federal Government is having a dangerous effect on them, noting that the area produces more than 20 per cent of oil revenue of the and is home to the largest gas deposit in West Africa, generates 480 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, expressing dismay that the people of the area have no electricity, no access roads to their communities, contaminated water and devastated farmlands as benefits for what they are contributing to the nation.

“Despite all that Ndokwa gives to the Federal Government, we do not have federal presence in our area,” Enebeli said, stating, “in the three Ndokwa local government areas – Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East and Ukwuani, the only thing that we have as Federal Government presence is a dilapidated prison yard, which is in Kwale and a few police stations located here and there; that is apart from the fact that we give about 20 per cent of the energy use of the country and we don’t have electricity in our area.”

He added, “we have so many marginal fields in Ndokwa, even in the area of appointment. Since I was born, I have never seen an Ndokwa-born minister, an ambassador; I have never seen a judge of whether the Supreme Court or whatever court and so on and so forth. That is why when we talk about conference, the minorities like us want to use the opportunity to tell Nigeria that it is unfair to us,” he stated.

Nigerians have part to play in war on terror –Jackrich

JackrichWhat is your reaction to comment by Borno State governor that Boko Haram is more organised than the Nigerian Army?

The problem we have in this country are the politicians especially those disgruntled elements who for one reason or the other did not get what they want from the system and they will never see anything good coming out from the system. If not for the military, the governor will not be in the Government House. He has a very big responsibility in the fight against Boko Haram. During the era of militancy in the Niger Delta, our governors and leaders came out with different approaches to engage the youths. I expect the governors to carry out sensitisation programmes in all local government areas, making the people to understand their roles in the fight. In my community when we see strange people we know. The military alone cannot do the job; they need the people who live there and that is why intelligence gathering is a key in the fight. So the governor should wake up and take responsibility or resign.

Aside terrorism war, kidnapping is also on the rise in the Niger Delta. How should President Jonathan and his adviser on Amnesty, Kingsley Kuku, handle this?

The amnesty programme has recorded great success under the able leadership of Hon. Kingsley Kuku; his commitment to ensuring quality in the training programmes for ex-militants is highly commendable; but I feel there should be a review of the programme to address present day challenges that were not envisaged at the setting up of the committee. I would also want Hon. Kuku to have periodic town hall meetings across the Niger Delta region with all stakeholders to ensure continuous communication. We cannot address these issues in Abuja. We need to meet the people at the grassroots; and we need more of sensitisation  on non-violence so we can create an enabling environment for multinational investors   to operate for our people to be engaged. If proper sensitisation programmes are carried out regularly, I believe it will change the mindset of our youths, and all this kidnapping and other social vices would be a thing of the past.

What is your take on the adoption of the supervising Minister for Education Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike for Governor 2015 by the Grassroots Development Initiative in Rivers State?

The GDI to the best of my knowledge is like Kengema Unity Forum, Network for Defence of Democracy, Good Governance and Main Stream Coalition etc. These organisations are not political parties; they can declare support for a candidate. The supervising minister is the grand patron of GDI so there is nothing wrong with them declaring support for him. But for the issue of the governorship ticket, it is strictly a party affair and I must commend our leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his fighting spirit in keeping the PDP family together even in the face of great opposition. The new chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, said that there will be a level playing field for all contestants, but for my candid opinion, the supervising minister is very much qualified and vibrant for the job but the grassroots supporters from other ethnic groups are insisting on equity by allowing other tribes partake of the leadership of the state, owing to the fact that the outgoing governor is from the same tribe (Ikwerre) with the minister and he (Amaechi) have ruled for eight years.

Last year you organised a solidarity rally in Buguma City, Rivers State, that attracted over 5,000 persons. What was it all about?

Well that was the period Governor Rotimi Amaechi defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and it was on the media that APC had taken over Rivers State. So, grassroots politicians and my people needed to know where we stand, the solidarity rally you saw on Channels TV that attracted over 5,000 people was organised by my organisation, Kengema Unity Forum, to make a statement that our solidarity remains with our father who is President Goodluck Jonathan. The forum was also used to declare support for his re-election come 2015 and one cannot support Mr President and not support his party and that is why we have decided to work with the PDP to ensure that Mr. President is re-elected.

You have spent so much on solidarity rallies, sensitisation as well as protests. Why are you doing all this? Do you have ambition for any elective office?

Well, my passion for good governance is my driving force and I have seen in President Goodluck Jonathan the quality of an extraordinary leader, who gives equal opportunity to all! I am a student of his leadership school and there is nothing too big to support his government.

What about your ambition?

I think it is still too early to talk about that. When we get to that bridge, we will cross it.

Tell us, do you enjoy cordial relations with your then colleagues in the creeks, I mean High Chief Government Tompolo, Chief Tom Ateke, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, Boyloaf, and the others?

I have a cordial relationship with all my colleagues in the struggle; to the best of my knowledge there is no rivalry. But my love and respect goes to Alhaji Asari Dokubo, who was my boss. I have no regrets serving him; he taught me how to struggle and mentored me. I would also commend other leaders who have inspired me in one way or the other.

We have seen some benefits in the struggle which are evident for all to see such as the birth of a ministry to address the economic and social needs of our people; the amnesty programme; the re-structure of the NDDC and above all the recognition of the Niger Delta which has given us the number one seat. Like the popular biblical saying of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ that a prophet is not recognised in his home town, I think we have a lot to do and we need to prove to our critics who have said the struggle was self-seeking, this struggle is selfless and it is about our people. Let us continue to use the resource that comes to us for the support and development of our people and communities.

‘Nigerian military can defeat Boko Haram’

What is your take on the re-election ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan?

I don’t see anything wrong in the president nursing ambition for re-election.

How do you see the alleged snipers hit list against President Jonathan?

The allegation is a threat to national security; those allegations are too weighty to just be over looked. The ex-president should be made to face the law. President Jonathan for as long as I have known him from Bayelsa, is a man of peace; he doesn’t believe in bloody politics and that is why in his administration we have not experienced high profile assassinations compared to others. He believes in the rule of law, that is why the 2011 elections were declared by international observers as free and fair because Mr. President doesn’t believe in “do or die” politics.

How would you advise the Federal Government to take steps against members of the Boko Haram sect?

A Warri based human rights group, Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defense (FJHRD), has implored the Federal Government to declare a total emergency rules on three northern states if it is serious about winning the war against the insurgents. The states included Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

The group wants the government to act quickly and appoint military administrators to oversee government activities in the affected states.

This position is contained in a statement issued by the National Coordinator of the group, Oghenejabor Ikimi on Monday and made available to Daily Independent in Warri.

The group advised the government to overhaul its strategies in the fight against terrorism otherwise innocent Nigerians would continue to be slaughtered by the dreaded Muslim fundamentalists, Boko Haram.

Amos UtuamaThe statement said: ‘’As the Federal Government is faced with the idea whether or not to extent its proclamation of a state of emergency in the three affected North Eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, we call on the Federal Government for the umpteenth time to declare a full scale state of emergency in the affected states by dismantling all existing democratic structures therein by appointing military administrators to oversee the administration of the said states in a bid to firmly deal with the rising terror violence and civil war in the North East region.

‘’In April 2013, when President Goodluck Jonathan declared the present partial state of emergency in the affected states, we criticized same as been not reaching decision at tackling the spate of terror violence and the crises in the north, but unfortunately, we came under a hail of criticism from a cross section of Nigerians then.

‘’It is abundantly clear that the above partial state of emergency have failed and there is the urgent need for the Federal Government to change tactics by declaring a full scale state of emergency in the affected states and seeking military and technical support from members of the international community at dealing with the current realities on ground in a bid to restoring normalcy and peace in the region’’.

Demolition: Govt won’t succumb to blackmail, says Omare

Franc OmareBy Harris-okon Emmanuel,

Correspondent, Warri

Delta State has stated that it won’t yield to blackmail and other threats in the ongoing exercise to demolish all illegal structures in a bid to give the major towns charming looks.

Commissioner for Environment, Franc Omare, stated this against the backdrop of public outcry over the degree of destruction of shops, kiosks, offices among others, which had lined most major roads in Warri, Effurun , Udu and other cities in the state.

Omare, maintained the exercise was punitive but aimed at bringing the environment back to its pristine nature, calling for attitudinal change from the populace.

The commissioner challenged those affected in the exercise to produce approval by the relevant authorities otherwise they should comply with the government as the exercise was in the overall interest of all and sundry.

He cautioned against trading on the sidewalks , as according to him, there are many stalls lying empty in the markets and shopping malls and advised them to use them instead of erecting illegal shops along the streets to sell their wares.

He debunked insinuation in some quarters that government was selective in the demolition exercise, saying that the operations were in accordance with the relevant environmental laws. Omare said the people have taken environmental cleanliness for granted for too long, maintaining that the exercise has come to stay, advising residents to cultivate the habits of cleanliness.

Apparently to tackle the huge waste generated by the people., he said government has awarded contract totaling about N1.7 billion for the construction of  an incinerator of 2000 tonnes in Warri , adding that the one in Ibusa has come on stream. The commissioner equally disclosed that government has engaged the services of no fewer than 1,600 environmental marshals to monitor unhealthy environmental behaviours, saying that more hands would be engaged for  the initiative in due course.

Omare also said many owners of property that allowed waste to be dumped in their frontages have been prosecuted and resounded the warning that no offender would be spared no matter their connection to the government.

He advised the people to do away with sentiment and imbibe the culture of ‘‘respecting’’ the environment, noting that ‘‘when Nigerians travel out, they behave well , but when they come back, they take things for granted’’, stressing that such negative attitudes must stop.

Ibori: A cry for justice

$

By Francis Onoiribholo–Bureau Chief, Benin

•Participants at the event

•Participants at the event

It is a commonly held belief that justice delayed is justice denied. Perhaps, the simple fact of the axiom is lost on the British in whose language these words are written. In every sense of the word, jurisprudence the world over basically derived from the British legal system that had taken root before most countries attained independence. Even with independence, most Commonwealth countries still pander to the cases delivered in Britain and frequently make references of precedents to cases determined in the United Kingdom.

Consequently, it behooves the same British judicial system to lead the way of the ‘law courts’ retaining the trust of all because it is generally held that the last hope of the common man rests with the courts. However, if the British courts now demonstrate strains of partiality then the hope of everyone without the right connection ‘to purchase’ justice is dashed.

As for the Nigerian government and the homestead judiciary, the after effect of the accusation and counter-accusation that ensued between the former Chief Justice of the Federation, Katsina-Alu, and the former President Court of Appeal, Ayo Salami, the two highest judicial officers at the time, had completely eroded what little integrity and respect that arm of the Nigerian democratic polity enjoyed among the populace.

‘Equal rights’ remain the stanchion of the United Nations basis for personal, group, community and federations’ propagation of equal existence, interaction and transactions, therefore, when recently a human rights group felt sufficiently displeased by the seeming injustice being meted out to the former Delta State governor standing trial in a British court, they called the press to express their thoughts.

Comrade Nowinta Igbotako spoke on behalf of the group that included Barr. Bernard O. Oyabevwe, Director, Legal Matters and Human Rights, Jude Isiaye, Director, Advocacy and Mobilisation and Erhuvwuvotu Makelemi, Coordinator, Public Education and Media at a press conference in Benin City, the Edo State capital declared thus:

“We, the members of Niger Delta Alliance for Human Rights, Nigeria, have watched with keen interest the startling revelations from the Southwark Crown Court sitting in London,  which fixed April 9 -11, for the preliminary hearing on the confiscation of assets case regarding the former Governor of Delta State, Nigeria,  Chief James Onanefe Ibori as the court is starved of evidence by both the prosecuting counsel and the Metropolitan Police which carried out investigations alongside the Nigerian  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) .

“We are particularly piqued that the Crown prosecution’s confiscation request is ignorantly anchored on  Nuhu Ribadu’s EFCC and British Metropolitan Police’s claim that Ibori defrauded Delta State, whereas there is no single evidence from Delta State, the so-called victim, either in the Crown’s trial bundle or the recent  hearing that there were withdrawals and funds diversion.

“It is equally shocking to note that despite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and British Metropolitan Police’s arrest, and detention of the officials of Delta State Government, including its Accountant-General between 2005 and October 2007, an incontestable fact remains that the EFCC and the British Police did not have any evidence that the state was defrauded by Ibori or that the state funds could be traced to accounts of the former governor except for his salary.”

The group, added, ”We are further alarmed that the Metropolitan Police instead of toeing a path of honour, attempts some face saving with a claim that it did not generate any evidence because it did not get the cooperation of the Delta State Government, a claim which the state government through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN), has stoutly denied.”

Ajuyah, expressed shock that  “the London Met police could make such allegations against the state government when in fact it never made any request for any document relating to Ibori’s trial whether formal or informal.” The Delta State Government also said, “the EFCC made specific requests and the state government gave full and maximum cooperation.” According to the Attorney-General, the “EFCC has boxes and boxes of documents from the state and I am aware that the documents were in possession of the Metro police and Crown Prosecution; if the state did not cooperate with EFCC, how come the Crown had materials from the Delta State during their investigations.

“It is, therefore, incontrovertible that the Metropolitan Police claim only further reinforces the fact that they did not obtain any evidence against Chief Ibori in their investigations. If the investigators did not obtain any evidence, what was the basis of going to court in the first place? Do you make arrest, keep a suspect in detention and begin to shop for evidence in a criminal case? It means therefore that the Metropolitan Police merely blew the over £7million British tax payers money from Department for International Development (DFID) in their merry-go-round investigation.

“We therefore wish to commend the trial Judge for being apolitical in handling the case and must be thorough and professional in the discharge of his duties because he is on the threshold of making history.

“Flowing from the current scenario, it has become obvious that the British Government can no longer continue to advertise the hounding of James Onanefe Ibori as a success story against money laundering and corruption as it really isn’t for want of evidence.

While we encourage the British Government and the European Union to continue the fight against corruption and money laundering, we are seriously disturbed that the Ibori case has exposed the politicisation of the war on corruption and money laundering. Cronies of governments and business interests of Britain and some European countries get covered while perceived enemies are the only ones portrayed as corrupt.

“We make this point against the backdrop of the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair dropping of the corruption inquiry into a BAE arms deal with Saudi Arabia on highly suspected political grounds.

We note with similar disturbing trend the French government’s recent pardon to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources under the Sani Abacha administration, Chief Dan Etete. He was cleared of the conviction slammed on him by a French court. Chief Dan Etete was in 2007, sentenced by a French court to three years in prison in absentia and a fine of 300,000 euros ($440,000) for money laundering but because he is today President Goodluck Jonathan’s foot soldier, and in a surprising twist, a Bulletin No. 3 dated Friday, March 7 2014 and issued by the Ministry of Justice, Criminal Cases and Pardon Division, the French government said Etete had been pardoned and cleared of the conviction.

The Nigerian Federal Government that had followed the Ibori’s case with its EFCC that has been highly criticized for being a pawn in the hands of Nigeria’s presidency pursuing only government’s enemies has surprisingly accepted a perpetual injunction which former Governor of Rivers State Peter Odili, (1999-2007) initiated restraining his arrest and prosecution till date.

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepriye Alamieyeseigha who jumped bail in the same Britain is the political mentor of President Goodluck Jonathan. Alamieyeseigha who was tried and convicted for money laundering and corruption in Nigeria was cleared of his sins and pardoned by the same President who has provided all the Federal might in support of Ibori’s prosecution. Why should Britain be overzealously tightening the screws on James Ibori over allegations of money laundering while it is patronizing a Nigerian Federal Government that has pardoned Diepriye Alamieyeseigha who jumped bail over the same offence of money laundering in the same Britain? What has become of the average British man or woman’s sense of morality and equity?

Also, we have on record the Nigerian Government’s dossier on over twenty past and present governors in Nigeria who have been fully investigated and found culpable of corruption but nothing has happened to them, instead they are hanging around the corridors of power. This, to say the least is detestable, completely unacceptable and totally condemnable. What with the case of Bode George who was accused of corruption and sentenced to jail. He completed his jail sentence and received a red carpet reception as he emerged from prison; an occasion attended by the Nigerian Presidency representative. We followed up how he secured the Supreme Court verdict, which freed him of corruption charges. Today he is a chieftain of the ruling party in South West Nigeria working to have Mr. President retain his grip on power.

In all of these, we are concerned about the seeming silence of the Western media in the face of obvious double standards of the British and Western world.

It is against this backdrop that we make the following demands to the British Government, European Union and indeed the international community, which includes Nigeria:

1. Urge the Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron to take more interest in the hearing of Ibori’s case, as it is capable of damaging British government’s reputation.

2. Call on the House of Commons to investigate the use of the British citizens’ taxpayer’s resources which was apparently wasted by the Metropolitan Police in the controversial investigation.

3. Encourage the trial Judge Anthony Pitts not to succumb to the lure of using inference to give his judgment but must stick to evidence as required by the British and International criminal law.

4. Call on Transparency International, Amnesty International, the International Human Rights Community, and the international media to keep an eye on Chief Ibori’s case given the latest revelations. If evidences genuinely link his assets to Delta State Government, they should be confiscated and repatriated but if not, there is no basis keeping Chief Ibori a day longer in British prisons.

5.   Call on the British Government to look beyond Chief James Onanefe Ibori in its war against money laundering and spread its arm to host of other Nigerian elites who have stashed millions of pounds sterling in UK banks, and should repatriate all Nigerian stolen assets.

6. Call on the Nigerian Federal Government and its international allies to stop forthwith this selective and vindictive fight against corruption.

The Courts in Britain with specific reference to trial judge, Anthony Pitts can do humanity a lot of good by sticking to the tenets of law and never allow the involvement of the Nigerian government in deliberately constituting an impediment to justice while shielding their cronies who have and are consistently plundering the resources of Nigeria.

Former Petroleum Minister, Dan Etete, has threatened to drag former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Bayelsa State, Anthony George-Ikoli, SAN, before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for allegedly defrauding him of $3 million.

Etete alleged that George-Ikoli, who served under former Governor Timipre Sylva, collected the money from him to buy 40 Jin Bei buses from China for Dan Etete Foundation.

He said in Yenagoa on Wednesday that the buses were intended for use by the foundation as part of its empowerment plan for youths in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states.

Etete, who was represented by the foundation’s co-ordinator, Kojo Etete, said George-Ikoli supplied him sub-standard buses which is a breach of the agreement on the deal.

He said the supplied sub-standard vehicles would be dangerous to the beneficiaries of the foundation.

He said the former justice commissioner purchased buses that do not have after-sales value and that there spare parts were not available in Nigeria.

He conducted newsmen around the 40 Jin Bei buses parked in the premises of Banquet Hall of Government House, Yenagoa, saying it was the sub-standard value that had prevented the foundation from presenting the ones allocated to Bayelsa State.

Etete said the foundation had given George-Ikoli a seven-day ultimatum to provide quality vehicles or return the money otherwise he would be dragged to the anti-graft agency and even the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
