To check incessant cases of plagiarism among post-graduate students, the management of the University of Uyo will henceforth subject every dissertation and thesis for masters and doctorate degrees respectively to software analysis, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Comfort Ekpo, has said.
This comes from observation that some research students of the institution under the guise of researching lift existing works to facilitate their programme, hence contributing nothing to existing knowledge, which is the primary objective of the research programme.
Addressing students during the orientation exercise for the post graduate students at the town campus of the University of Uyo, Ekpo said the measure to authenticate the originality of every post graduate work is due to the relationship between research and development.
She noted that most discoveries which led to development in various fields of human endeavours the world over came from painstaking academic research, hence the need for students reaching out for certificates associated with such to be committed to such excellence. Ekpo who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof Okon Ansa, disclosed that a Phd thesis from the University of Uyo was among the first 10 in the country in terms of rating and therefore called on research students to emulate such diligence and hard work.
