THE Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Delta State chapter, has protested the incessant killing of their members by unknown gunmen without arrest of suspects.
Gunmen recently murdered Austin Ichege, Ughelli branch Chairman of the association, while returning home from office.
Led by Gene Mowah, Asaba branch Chairman, other chairmen and secretaries of the association from other parts of the state marched to the police headquarters in Asaba to lodge their complaint.
They insisted that the endless killings of lawyers in the state must stop, because they were tired of unresolved murders of lawyers.
Particularly, the killers of Ichege must be fished out, the NBA chieftains said.
Mowah said the situation is worrisome, reminding the police that the suspects responsible for the murder of two lawyers mysteriously on their way to Isoko March 27 2014 have not been apprehended or any arrest made until the recent one.
He lamented that such development could encourage more untimely killings.
“We want police authority to carry out proper investigation over the killing of Icheghe and others. We are ready to give the police proper support to check the trend,’’ Mowah stated.
Responding, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, said the police authority has constituted a squad to unravel the killing, just as he advised the lawyers to give adequate information relating to the slain lawyer for police to be more guarded.
Represented by Mr Celestine Okoye, Deputy Commissioner of Police, he advised lawyers to be security conscious and careful in the course of carrying out their professional assignments, maintaining that the trend must be checked o make the society a conducive one.
“Police will do its best to arrest the killers. We need total information from his colleagues, families and other members of the public on this matter.
“We are carrying out total investigation and we don’t want to overlook anything.
“At the same time your members have to be careful in some of the cases they handle and if possible confide in some people on delicate matters,’’ Okoye said.
