A former Unugbrogodo (Prime Minister) of Oghara Traditional Council of Chiefs and political leader in the Ethiope West Local Government area of Delta State, Chief Abraham Didenwe Tietie, has said the opinion of Oghara and Ethiope West was not sought by Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) before the declaration of an Urhobo consensus governorship candidate at Uvwiamuge – Agbarho.
According to Tietie, Oghara is the political Mecca of politics in Delta State and, therefore, it behooves the body to seek the opinion and approval on the decision to choose an Urhobo candidate to run for the 2015 governorship race.
This decision he described as faulty because of the absence of key political players from Oghara, which is the headquarter of Delta politics.
While noting that the present executive of UPU is of no consequence owing to its split into two factions, Tietie added that UPU seems to have lost its bearing by veering into politics instead of pursuing its set goals of uniting Urhobo by its socio-cultural objectives as pursued by the umbrella body founding fathers like Chief Mukoro Mowoe, Chief Salubi, Gen. David Ejoor (rtd), Chief Benjamin Okumagba and late Gen. Patrick Aziza (rtd).
Tietie told journalists that the choice of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa was a welcome development to the electorate in the state owing to the Governor–elect’s loyalty to the former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, who he described was Okowa’s political mentor since 1998.
The Oghara political leader disclosed that Okowa was earlier recommended to replace Ibori as state Governor but was later prevailed upon to tarry a while after Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan completes his two tenures in the Government House, Asaba.
Tietie also shed light on the election of Miss Eriatake Ibori daughter of Chief James Ibori into the state House of assembly. He explained that since it was Oghara turn to produce the House of Assembly’s candidate, the intention of Eriatake could not be turned down as both Ogharefe and Oghareki finally endorsed her candidacy that eventually led to her election to the Assembly.
On the speculation of age requirement, Tietie said the former Governor’s daughter is most qualified in both academic and age, saying, all her papers are with INEC and had been duly cleared for the election.
