UNIPORT matriculates 6,930

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) on Tuesday matriculated 6,930 students during its 36th matriculation ceremony held at Choba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Out of the figure, 1,911 were admitted in the College of Natural and Applied Science, while Faculty of Humanities admitted 1,183 students.

A breakdown of the number showed that Faculty of Education had 1,148 students, Faculty of Management Sciences 802, Faculty of Social Sciences 748, and College of Engineering 380.  Others are, Faculty of Agriculture 348, College of Health Sciences 258, and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences152.

Administering the matriculation oath, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, Vice-Chancellor of the university, urged the students to shun cultism, truancy and examination malpractice.

He also said students who failed to attend the minimum of 75 per cent lectures bench mark would not be allowed to sit for examinations.

The vice-chancellor said the authorities of the university would sanction students who flouted its rules and regulations.

Ajienka said the university which currently ranked ninth among Nigerian universities was focused on its entrepreneurial programmes of training and producing world-class graduates.

“This is an entrepreneurial university and our emphasis is to produce sound graduates who will use their skills to create enterprises that will provide jobs for the army of the unemployed.

“Students who agree to commit to hard-work will be rewarded with the university scholarship and such students would also be placed on the Dean’s Reward List,’’ he said.
