Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. John Okeoghene Aferaha, has urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to use the Lenten period to repent and seek God’s forgiveness for peace to reign in Nigeria.

Bishop Aferaha, who made the call during a homily to mark the beginning of he Lenten period at Sacred Heart Cathedral, headquarters of Catholic Diocese of Warri, also urged Nigerians to seek God’s mercy and salvation “so that our desire to have a good country will come to reality.”

Bishop Afereha said Nigerians should use the period to draw closer to God with genuine repentance so that they will enjoy peace and love of God.

He reminded Nigerians that the problems of the country were as a result of selfishness, greed, hatred, avarice, failure to express love to one another and indiscipline, adding that the period of Lent is to “discipline our body, draw closer to God and totally repent from our evil ways and God will be ready to forgive us.”

Afareha disclosed that the lent season which all Christians are expected to observe, started about 6th century A.D during Pope Gregory the Great, adding that the practice has been on since then.
