Igbodo community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State has honoured 17 of its sons and daughters.
The honour was in recognition of their contributions to community development,
They included the Director General of BRACED (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta) commission, Joe Keshi. Others were Mrs. Mary Nkem-Nwaeke of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), wife of a journalist with the Delta Rainbow Television (DRTV), Warri, Comrade Nkem Nwaeke.
The awardees were honoured at the grand finale of a weeklong community programme tagged ‘Igbodo Mass Return Home 2014’ which held at the palace of the Obi of Igbodo Kingdom.
Chairman of the planning committee for the weeklong event, Dr. Henry Okonye, said it was intended to serve as a big re-union of families “and will also give opportunities to knowing ourselves the more, planning for the future while re-examining the past.
“We intend achieving the objective of having every indigene of Igbodo come home, know about Igbodo and then contribute towards the development of the kingdom.
“We know that some of our children in the Diaspora do not know about the town, their parents only told them that they come from Igbodo but anything about the town, they do not know. With this programme, they will know more about us, our culture and way of life,” he added.
Joe Keshi expressed satisfaction with the turn-out of Igbodo indigenes at the event, saying that there was nothing “as good as to be honoured and recognised by your own people and it serves to encourage others behind us.”
