The people of Okuesan and its environs in Esan South East Local Government of Edo State have called on the Inspector, General of Police, Suleiman Abba and the Edo State Commissioner of police, Mr Foluso Adebanjo, to arrest the Fulani herdsmen, who invaded the community and terrorise the people.

Spokesman for the community, Mr Solomon Ibharuneafe, who spoke to Daily Independent on the issue on Wednesday, said that members the community can no longer go about their daily activities for fear of attacks by Fulani herdsmen, who have graduated to kidnapping of innocent citizens and asking for ransom.

He explained that the Fulani herdsmen make their victims to wander about in the thick forest until the ransom was paid at a designated point before they were released.

Ibharuneafe added that only last week, a corpse that was being transported to her final resting place in the East and passing  through Ukpaja, Ubiaja the headquarters of the local government was  allegedly waylaid by the criminals.

He stated that the people conveying the corpse were kidnapped while the corpse was dropped on the way side, adding that it took the effort of the people to take the corpse back to the police station at Ubiaja. The spokesman added that apart from that, the bus conveying passengers from the East to the North was stopped along Okhuesan- Ewatto- Ewohimi road and the occupants were robbed.

He said that luck, however, ran out for the robbers when one passenger believed to be a military personnell but dressed in mufti was shot but that the bullet did not penetrate his body. He said that the man over-powered one of the criminals and took his gun while others ran into the bush.

According to him, “The people now live in fear because these criminals move from one farmland to the other and anybody they meet, they demand ransom or even take away their food items. As a result of this, people are now scared of going to their farms, which are their source of economic survival. Just few days ago, a timber contractor was matcheted by these hoodlums and the victim is still under intensive care at the General Hospital, Ubiaja”.
