An Evboriaria Magistrate’s Court in Benin has ordered one Austin Okonkwo, 27, to be remanded in prison for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old minor who has Downs syndrome.
The Chief Magistrate, Frank Idiake, gave the order following a plea of not guilty by the accused, who is facing one-count charge of defilement. Idiake, who refused to entertain the bail application of the accused, said cases of defilement were on the increase.
The prosecutor, Aigbedion Obakpolor, had earlier told the court that the offence was allegedly committed on November 29 when Okonkwo took the minor to his room.
He said that when the girl came out of the accused room, she cried of pains in her vagina, which led to his arrest.
The magistrate adjourned the case until January 21 for trial.
