The Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) has partnered with the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) to resolve the issues of oil spills and oil-related conflicts in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

At their inaugural meeting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the two bodies set up a ‘Multi Stakeholders Platform’ (MSP) to drive the process of finding lasting solution to incidences of oil spills and conflicts in the region.

Participants included the representatives of Ministries of Environment, Information, community leaders, youths, civil society organisations and the media.

In his remarks, NSRP’s  Economic and Natural Resources Manager, Olumide Olaniyan, said the NSRP was a six-year progamme aimed at galvanising efforts to manage conflicts non-violently in Nigeria and reduce the effect of violence on Nigerians.

He said the programme supported peace initiative at the national level in eight target states across four zones worst affected by violence.

Olaniyan listed the zones as Middle Belt, Niger Delta, North East and North West.

He said the NSRP focal point in the Niger Delta was to manage and prevent oil-spill-related violence through MSP.
