Inhabitants of Igbei community in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State on Thursday took to the streets to protest alleged state government take over of their land, despite a court order.

The placard bearing protesters, while chanting songs that captured their grievances, marched through major streets in the community.

Spokesperson for the protesters, who is also community chairman, Mr. Amin Abdulai, lamented that the state government in flagrant disobedience to an order of court of competent jurisdiction restraining it, was still laying claim to the said land.

Abdulai alleged that the High Court and the Court of Appeal had in 2003 delivered judgment in the community’s favour and wondered why the government was still laying claim to the said land. “The government has erected sign post on the land and I wonder why the government  is still harassing us and claiming ownership,’’ he said.

The community chairman who said the land constitutes part of their inheritance from their fore-fathers, appealed to the state government to vacate the land.
