The Bayelsa States House of Assembly has tackled the Governor Seriake Dickson-led government over lack of supervision of the education system in the state.
It called on the government to be serious with its declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector by fundamentally overhauling the entire system to achieve quality education. Speaker of the Assembly, Konbowei Benson, spoke on Wednesday when the Commissioner for Education, Salo Adikumo, Permanent Secretary and members of the Senior Secondary Schools Board appeared before the lawmakers for questioning during plenary.
Other officials who also appeared for questioning were the executve secretary and members of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as well as senior special assistants and special advisers to the governor on education matters.
Expressing concern over the decaying education system in the state, Benson remarked that something was fundamentally wrong with the system.
He lamented the poor performance of some officers during questioning on the floor of the House, pointing out that the state was not heading in the right direction in terms of education.
He observed that the schools’ evaluation system in the state was faulty and advised the relevant authorities to perform or risk being sacked.
Documents submitted to the lawmakers indicated that some secondary schools in rural communities with over one hundred and fifty students, had only two or three teachers, whereas schools in the state capital and environs have so many teachers.
