The leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has stated that it will not change the executive committee of the Yakurr chapter of the party despite the pressure being mounted in certain quarters.
State Chairman of the party, Ntufam John Okon, made the disclosure during a press conference to mark the second anniversary of the tenure of the state exco of the PDP under his chairmanship.
Okon stated this after a group, the Yakurr Patriotic Forum (YPF), a political pressure group in the central part of the state, raised the alarm over what it ascribed to the sinking fortunes of PDP in the area.
The YPF had attributed the alleged dwindling fortunes of PDP in the area to bad leadership and, therefore, demanded that the leaders of the party in Yakurr should be changed.
On whether the Yakurr leadership of the PDP will be removed as demanded by a section of the party, Okon said: “No. Let me also make it clear. This exco did not conduct the election that brought in the ward, the chapter leadership and even us. I was brought in by Ekpo Okon administration. He was the chairman of the congress that emerged as Chairman. so this things were already on ground. They were kept on ground and if you could not get it then, you cannot use me to get it now; no matter the blackmail; you cannot get it through me. A democratic institution is something that emerges by election.
It shouldn’t be by fiat. If you have soothing about discipline, like I talk about Calabar South that came up, you can handle such a thing. But when somebody says I cannot identify with the chapter; who is this person; somebody that has no relevance anywhere; you come and start telling us what we have to do for a party structure that was put in place before I came in? If xwill be peace today? If I come and say Ekpo Okon put this structure let me start changing it, even my own chapter, whether, I like it or not will I be doing democracy?
