The Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Senator Ita Enang, has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State to call Fulani herdsmen operating in the state to order before things get to a dangerous level.

Enang made this appeal in Uyo following complaints by some communities in the state against Fulani herdsmen who are of the habit of channeling their herds into people’s farms to destroy their crops.

The senator, who recalled that the lingering crisis in the Northern part of the country originated from the herdsmen, charged the Federal Government to call the herdsmen to order in the interest of peace.

He stressed that no one or group of persons should allow his means of livelihood to affect another person’s means of survival.

“There is a modern way of managing lifestock to avoid creating problems or ethnic division.

“There is need for both the federal and state governments to properly address the matter, issue proper guidelines to avoid open confrontation that may expose our rural populace to crisis and insecurity,” he said.

It could be recalled that some Fulani herdsmen recently killed a youth from Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State for trying to prevent them from encroaching his farmland with some herds of cattle.
