Akwa Ibom State police command arrested 1,418 suspects for their involvement in various crimes including kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery in 2013.
Commissioner for Police, Umar Gwadabe, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing the media on the command’s achievements.
Gwadabe disclosed that when the crime statistics for 2013 was compared with that of 2012 there was a reduction in crime rate in the state.
According to the commissioner, there was general reduction in crime when compared to what obtained in the corresponding period of 2012.
Gwadabe pointed out that while 74 murder cases were recorded in 2012, in 2013, 68 were recorded; there were 24 kidnap cases recorded in 2012, as against seven in 2013; while 54 armed robbery cases were recorded in 2012, and 46 recorded in 2013, 46 cases among other areas.
He explained that out of 1,993 cases reported to the police, 963 are under investigation, 662 prosecuted while 368 were forwarded to Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for vetting and advice.
Gwadabe disclosed that stolen properties worth N6, 519,928 were recovered from criminals during the period under review.
The Command, Gwadabe said, also rescued 23 persons including children from kidnappers, human traffickers and parents who tagged their children as witches /wizards.
The command during the period under review recovered several weapons and ammunition from armed robbery suspects including two AK47 riffles, one English made single barrel gun, five double barrel guns, one Brownie pistol.
Others include, 36 locally made pistols, three single barrel locally made pistols recovered from sea pirates and nine AK 47 riffle magazines, 109 rounds of live ammunition and 678 cartridges.
