The critical role of security agencies in maintaining law and order and in defending against interests inimical to a particular environment cannot be overemphasized. As such, to thrive, governments all over the world give priority to providing these agencies with the necessary facilities to meet the critical goal of securing lives and property. But most times due to insufficient funds, this goal suffers setback unless assistance comes from the public or private sector.
In line with this, to buck the trend in Jesse, Ethiope west local government area of Delta State, an individual, Chief John Halims Ogheneochuko Agoda, a former member of the House of Representatives, with the support of the host community recently decided to renovate and restructure the Jesse Divisional Police Headquarters. While welcoming the police community, Jesse community and other stakeholders to the commissioning of the Jesse Divisional Police Headquarters, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Police Superintendent Patience Ugbe stated, “It is paramount to state that this occasion was made possible by the sole effort of Rt. Hon. John Halims Agoda, former member of the House of Representatives who represented Ethiope West Federal Constituency, and the cooperation of His Royal Highness, Edward Otadaferua, Erhiekevwe I (Ododo I), the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, without whom this occasion would not have held.”
Continuing, the DPO stated that battling crime in Delta State had been made possible through the strategic tactics of crime combating, instituted by the Delta Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, through the intelligent use of two-way radio means of communication, which adoption has reduced crime rate drastically in Idjerhe in particular and Delta State in general.
She pointed out that with the effort of the police commissioner, the Area Commander, the Idjerhe Kingdom monarch and her able men in the Division, they were able to combat crime to “a very reasonable level” to the extent that residents of Jesse Kingdom now sleep well with their two eyes closed. She commended the enormous effort and cooperation of the people of Idjerhe kingdom who have been helping the police with useful information leading to crime reduction and control.
Delta Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, in his remarks reiterated the need for the police and the community to partner for the greater security and protection of the communities.
The police commissioner, communities recounted that the need for synergy between the police and the communities was one of the first calls he made on assuming office.
According to him, “When I came to Delta I visited all the police formations and advised and warned them not to allow criminals and other hoodlums to take over the state,” adding that this formed the template for some of the programmes he initiated to sustain the peace in the state.
Aduba further informed the audience that they should not fail to report any of his men who fall below expectation to the authorities so they could be appropriately dealt with, noting that the police authorities would disown any of its officers or rank and file that fails to act correctly.
