Staff and members of the Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City have been thrown into mourning following the reported death of a staff and an active member of the hospital’s staff cooperative society, Mrs. Nkem Idemudia, and this subsequently has led to the postponement of the hospital Staff Cooperative Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).  The late nurse was said to be from Delta State and an active member of the cooperative society.

It is alleged that the woman may have been affected by the “hostile environment” she has been working as according to her colleagues she has been denied promotion for not less than four times in the last two years.

She was said to have also complained that she was becoming frustrated as her contemporaries had risen to become assistant chief nurses while she was still a senior nurse 1.

Curiously, no staff wanted to be mentioned for fear of being victimised as they accused the management of high handedness.

“She was in the hospital on Friday only for us to hear on Saturday morning that she slumped and died. Because of that, we have to postpone our AGM since we cannot be celebrating while our member is dead.  “She was a young woman of about 42 years and she was working in the Emergency Unit of the hospital. For four times, she was not promoted while her mates have become Assistant Nurses, so, we strongly believed that the hostile working environment here must have contributed to what happened to her.

“Imagine a situation where the head of an organisation of this nature comes around the premises and even the wards with armed security personnel in full glare of our patients some of who are hysterical.”

But when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Efe Stewart, denied all the allegations as he said, “Written tests are conducted by officials of the Ministry of Health in conjunction with management and those who pass get their promotion.
