The people of Uyo (Akwa Ibom North East) Senatorial District have dared Governor Godswill Akpabio on his pronouncements that Eket Senatorial District will produce the next governor of the state in 2015.
The people dropped the hint when they met with senator representing them and Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Solomon Enang.
A political leader in Uyo Senatorial District, Mr. Sunny Udo, declared that it was the turn of the Etinan Federal Constituency (under Uyo Senatorial District) to produce the next governor of Akwa Ibom State.
According to Udo, “this is a collective decision of the people of the area when they adopted a former Secretary to Government of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Umana Umana, as their governorship candidate.”
“This is the turn of Etinan Federal Constituency to produce the next governor of Akwa Ibom State,” Udo insisted.
“When the Uyo Senatorial District congregated last in Etinan, we all adopted Umana Umana as our governorship candidate come 2015. We can’t subjugate our right to produce the governor for any other senatorial districts.
“We fought for the creation of Akwa Ibom State vehemently when others were busy looking for Atlantic State, Itai State, among others. We had toiled for the state, and we can’t allow anybody to subjugate us.”
Responding to the people’s desire during his presentation of Christmas gifts to members of
Etinan Federal Constituency in Etinan, Enang declared: “I will work with you people to ensure that I support your candidate for 2015 governorship race in the state.
“But one thing I need to let you know is that every other senatorial districts in the state will be allowed to contest the election, otherwise there will be no democracy,” he said.
Enang averred that he would support any candidate his senatorial district presents to him for 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.
According to Enang, as a representative of the people, he has to do what the people expect him to do, and not acting according to his own disposition because democracy is all about majority rule.
It would be recalled that the people of Eket (South) Senatorial District are insisting on the implementation of the PDP zoning formula in the 2015 elections as the governorship slot should be declared a solely Eket affairs while Oro people are demanding that as the third largest ethnic group they should produce the next governor because Ibibio and Annang have taken their turns.
Governor Godswill Akpabio has declared at various fora that the next governor of the state will come from Eket Senatorial district.
Enang described former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC) as political wayfarers.
He stated that those who defected from the party were not original members of PDP, but people who happened to pick up the party’s tickets at a point in time.
