The new board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) led by Bassey Dan-Abia has charged the staff and management of the commission to work conscientiously to reverse the negative image of the commission.
Dan-Abia, who made the appeal at the commission’s headquarters on resumption of duty, in Port Harcourt, enjoined all staff to impress the stakeholders of the commission that they had not derailed from the commission’s original vision and mission.
The new NDDC helmsman pleaded with the staff and management of the commission to be conscious of the negative perception of the commission in the minds of stakeholders, indigenes of the Niger Delta and the public.
He lamented: “It is the humble impression of the new board that we have to be honest with ourselves and accept that the commission has not met the expectations of the people of the region and we must find a way to justify the expectation of the people”.
Dan-Abia appealed: “Let me assure that I will not be any body’s enemy. Let us redouble ourselves to our duties and responsibilities. Let us eschew bitterness. The in-fighting that existed between directors in the past should be avoided. In the new board, there will be no room for such division. Please, let us work together as a team and one family.
“Let us disagree to agree. There must be attitudinal re-orientation. We should stop repeating old strategies that have not worked. Rather than alienate our stakeholders, we will engage our stakeholders. We must open a fresh and new chapter.”
The new NDDC boss expressed dismay that most of the negative information circulating in the public about the NDDC, specifically in the social media, are from the staff of the commission. “This is time for soul-searching. We must learn from our past mistakes and experiences. This new board will practice what it preaches. I am happy to be back to the NDDC.”
Dan-Abia further urged the staff and management of the commission to engage the youths of the Niger Delta region so that they don’t feel alienated from the programmes of the commission, adding, “we must change the image of the commission”. He noted: “We must go back to the NDDC Road Map. We need to identify where we went wrong. We must reposition the commission for greater heights. We must reposition NDDC in the eyes and minds of our stakeholders, development partners and the international community. This time, we must get it right”.
