Fishermen of Itsekiri extraction in Delta State have been given fishing equipment worth over N50m to assist them in their businesses in the riverine communities with a warning to every recipient to ensure judicious use of the gear and make adequate returns to enable other benefit from the Federal Government largess.

Presenting the items made up of 24 outboard engine boats, 24 wooden fishing boats, 50 fishing nets and floaters to the beneficiaries at the Warri Club Waterfront Jetty, Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, an Itsekiri woman leader said that the largess was a fall out from the Goodluck Jonathan administration through the former Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina to enable them develop real fishing business.

She said, “We shall not make the mistake we made before. We shall not give these boats to people who are not real fishermen and we shall police these boats. These boats shall be given through communities who shall guarantee them in turn. The proceeds from paybacks will enable us to buy more boats for others.” She added that the programme will be backed by a Technical School to ensure it succeeds this time around.

She said that the donation to the fishermen was devoid of party politics and warned politicians against attempt to high-jack the programme. She said a similar programme set 25years ago by His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse11 had failed due to political interference and warned that it would not business as usual.
