Ekwevugbe Distributors’ Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited, Urhiephron, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta state recently celebrated its 25 years Silver Jubilee and Annual General Meeting (AGM), with increase in net surplus from N913, 000.00 to N929, and 490.00.
In his speech during the Annual General Meeting/Silver Jubilee held at Urhiephron, Chief John Okoro, president of the Co-operative Society, said the 25th AGM also marked the silver jubilee of the society, adding that it was through the co-operation, pragmatic ideas and commitment of members that the body survived the past 25 years.
He said, “Our developmental strides have made us to acquire a land and erect two self-contained apartments which is on-going. We also have revolving assets of N11, 904,102.21 towards improvements of our lives.
“Members have bought vehicles; built houses, done their marriages, sent their children to school, conducted befitting burial for their late parents and in-laws.
“Membership has increased from 1 to 58 persons; we have also integrated women into our fold which had brought some softness in the operations of the co-operative society”.
He added that, “The Net-Surplus of the co-operative society has increased from N913, 000. 00 to N929, 490. 00; a difference of N16, 490 or 1.8 percent increase.”
According to him, being one of the pioneering co-operative societies in Ughievwen, the group has made significant in-put to the development of the community, saying that “Our society is one of the first three awardees of 2013 AGM of the union; I want to urge us to sustain it”.
On her part, the Principal Registrar of Co-operative Societies for Ughelli South Local Government Area, Mrs. V. Oshovwon who was represented by Mrs. Henrietta Onamejere, said that the celebration of the AGM and Silver Jubilee showed that the co-operative society is very much alive.
She said, “to have survived up to 25 years shows that you will forge ahead better by contributing hugely to your shares savings and deposits.
“I can see that much attention has not been given to the deposits column of the co-operative society, so I urge members to increase their monthly deposits”.
She commended the society for the building project at 25 years, adding that it is a feat some co-operative societies that have existed up to 50 years could not even achieve, adding that the project should be completed. She advises members to take their meetings and loan refunds serious.
The group also used the occasion to elect its new executive. Those elected include: Chief John Okoro, President; Sir P. C Okotete, Vice President; Chief (Sir.) J. A Tenyo, Secretary; Mr. J. A Tesi, Treasurer; Rev. J. O Emakpor, Secretary 2; Mr. A. O. Adjarho, Secretary 3; Hon. (Chief) Sunday Apah, member; Mr. G. Bago, member and Hon. Sylvester Sopian, member.
