As the battle for who becomes Speaker of the in-coming House of Representatives gathers momentum, members of the Niger Delta Peoples Conference have urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the plum position to the South-South geo political zone of the country.
They also recommended the choice of either the lawmaker representing Owan Federal Constituency, Pally Iriase, or his colleague representing Akoko Edo Federal Constituency, Peter Akpatason, both from Edo State and ranking lawmakers for consideration for the position.
According to Iyamu Osaro (aka Culture), the choice of either of the two lawmakers has become necessary to reflect the principles of the federal character as provided for in the nation’s Constitution.
Iyamu pointed out that “as far as South-East geo political zone could not make it to the exalted seat, in order to be fair to all, the Speakership position of the Federal House of Representatives should be zoned to South-South geo political zone under the leadership of the APC, without any opposition within the party contesting or agitation from other geo political zones.”
He stated that Edo State contributed 45 per cent votes to President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC during the March 28 general elections among all the states in the oil rich region.
“Viewing from the standpoint of the just concluded Presidential elections where Gen. Muhammadu Buhari emerged the winner on the platform of the APC, it is on record that it is only in Edo State that the President-elect was able to obtain about 45 per cent votes in the South-South.”
