A group, Diamond-Crest for Youth Education Foundation, has condemned the recent blowing up of a major gas pipeline at Ighwrenene in Delta State by suspected militants.
A statement by President/Chief Executive Officer of the group, Gideon Onyedi, saw the development as a potential disaster and a breach of the peace in the country.
Onyedi called on perpetrators of the act to think through their actions and consequences and desist from such acts forthwith.
He urged opinion leaders and well-meaning individuals from the Niger Delta region to call the suspected militants to order to forestall recurrence.
“We also call on our peace-loving, educated, politically-accommodating, and patriotic leaders from the Niger-Delta where these suspected militants operate to rise up now and engage these youths in a bid to nip this ugly trend in the bud before it gets out of hand. “Anything that will affect peaceful coexistence and building of mutual trust and the present transition and handover process should not only be condemned but practically discouraged. A stitch in time saves nine.
“We call on every Nigerian to join hands together to build a peaceful and prosperous nation by creating a socio-political atmosphere of mutual trust. “It is our firm conviction and crusade that all sections of this country will benefit more from the change that has taken place if and when we cooperate with the in-coming new government to build a better Nigeria.”
Onyedi maintained that people are as good as the government they get; and the government is as good as the people that elect it.
“Every nation gets the government it deserves and in a democracy, the people get the leaders they deserve.
“This is what democracy is all about. It is in our hands to make the new government work. It is in our hands to make this change work,” he added.
