Chairman, Western Zone, Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Robinson Ogunkoru, has called for the development of Gelegele Seaport to create jobs in the area.
Ogunkoru made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gelegele, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
He regretted that the seaport, which he said had the potential of stimulating business in the area, was abandoned soon after President Shehu Shagari left office in 1983. He said the abandonment had retarded development in the Ijaw communities of the state
“We are saddened because this port is enough to turn around the economy of the state and the people of Gelegele. I think the state government also has a role to play in the development of the port. It can do something to stimulate it even though it is a Federal Government’s project,” he said.
Ogunkoru listed the benefits of the port, if developed, to include wealth creation and employment opportunities.
“Developing the port is one way to create wealth for the teeming masses of this area.It is not by rhetoric, if the sea port is developed, it will create a good number of jobs here in Gelegele in Edo State and the entire country,’’ he said.
