A don, Prof. Friday Omoregbe, has urged the federal and state governments to establish an Agricultural Information Agency to enlighten farmers in rural areas on government’s policies and projects.

Omoregbe, who is a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, University of Benin, made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

He decried a situation where farmers were either unable to participate or benefit from existing government’s development projects “because of lack of information about them.’’

The lecturer said that major challenge to project implementation was that “there is a disconnection between the farmers and the government due to unawareness on the part of farmers.

“Corruption is another problem that also disconnects people from these projects.

“Sometimes, people entrusted with the disbursement of the approved fund for implementation of such projects mismanage the money, making the projects to fail.“When the people that the project is intended to serve are disconnected from the implementation process, the project cannot be sustained.

“The people should be encouraged to participate in all the processes from the planning to implementation stages for success of the projects,” he said.

He, therefore, called for the creation of an Agricultural Information Agency in the country to enlighten rural dwellers on existing government’s agricultural projects and policies.
