Chairman of Ethiope East local government area, Mrs. Faith Majemite, has called for sober reflection, peace and dialogue in the country.

The call was made on the occasion of the grand finale of the 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance and Emblem Appeal Week celebrated at Isiokolo recently.

The chairman noted that the fallen heroes deserved the commemoration for their service to the nation and humanity.

“We will continue to pay tribute to the unknown soldiers, who fought and died in wars. It is a tribute to salute their courage, a tribute to sacrifice and a tribute to valour. We remain indebted to our heroes and heroines who are unknown.

“Against this background, I wish to remark that this is not an occasion for merry-making. Rather, it is a solemn anniversary that calls for sober reflection,” she stated.

The chairman posited that giant stride of the Governor Uduaghan administration in the state would not have been possible in an atmosphere of rancour.

“We should develop the culture of dialogue in resolving conflicts. We should also avoid acts and utterances that divide us and embrace those that foster national unity; we should sue for peace at all times and place the unity of the nation over and above all interests and consideration,” she urged.

The chairman also used the occasion to warn against criminality in the area, calling on parents and guardians to always advise their children and wards against criminal acts, saying that Ethiope East council has zero tolerance for criminality. Earlier in her address, the Chairman, Nigeria Legion, Ethiope East LGA, Major Moses Ogboru Emuekevwo, lamented the hardship being faced by the wives and children of the fallen heroes, saying that the welfare of the deceased soldiers’ widows and dependants is a liability to the Nigerian Legion.

“The government of today pays those of us who are still alive very small monthly pension, and worse still, is owing us pension arrears for five good years, why?” he asked

Appealing to President Goodluck Jonathan to pay them those arrears before the forthcoming general election, Ogboru solicited for appointments to the members of the legion and jobs for the widows and dependants of the fallen heroes.
