Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Edo Sate has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government within which to pay the July and August 2014 salaries of doctors.

The state NMA chairman, Prof. Afekhide Omoti, gave the ultimatum during a press briefing in Benin.

He threatened that the doctors would go on strike if the state government failed to pay them at the expiration of the 21 days.

He said that the failure of the state government to address the issues within the stipulated timeframe, would force doctors in Edo State to embark on a strike February 2.

According to him, if the state government did not heed to the demands of the association, all doctors working in the state public hospitals would withdraw their services.

He listed their grievances to include failure to implement the full Consolidated Medical Salary (CONMESS), poor infrastructure and lack of appropriate working tools and shortage of health personnel in Edo State.

Omoti also said the issue of multiple taxes on private health institutions and other challenges like inefficient management policy had hindered quality healthcare delivery in the state.

“The non-payment of the withheld July and August 2014 salaries due to participation of Edo State doctors in the NMA national strike between July 1 and August 25, 2014.

“We note that members of other professional unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were paid their salaries in spite of the fact that they embarked on a six-month nationwide strike,” he said.
