Rev. Franklin Ihemefor of the African Episcopal Methodist Zion Church (AEMZC) has called on politicians to conduct their political campaigns peacefully.
Ihemefor made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt while speaking on ways of achieving peaceful 2015 general elections.
He said that only strict adherence to the Electoral Act as well as the individual conscience could prevent chaos and bloodshed among politicians.
‘’Elections are not the end to the means of leadership, but a continuous process of forming governments.
‘’So, it ought not to be done with desperation, but according to the rules for the peaceful co-existence of the country,’’ Ihemefor said.
The cleric, who charged politicians to close ranks with opponents, said that it was imperative to resist campaigns of calumny.
Ihemefor expressed optimism in the ability of INEC and security agents to ensure violence-free elections in spite of the challenges.
He said that credible elections could not be possible without the collective responsibility of both the electorate and politicians.
The cleric, who urged voters to vote wisely, said that the destiny of the nation lied on their hands.
