Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta on Tuesday in Asaba stressed the need for lawyers in the state Ministry of Justice to acquire more skills to enhance their practice.

Declaring open a three-day development programme for legal officers in the ministry, Uduaghan said their knowledge and practice skill would be increased through such “unique and development-oriented programme’’.

He said it was expected that at the end of the programme the participants would understand the processes of ensuring that every officer of the ministry operates in compliance with the Constitution.

The governor urged them to take a serious look at the challenges inherent in the country’s criminal justice system.

He said the people of Delta were delighted by the resourcefulness and commitment of the ministry, and that the state had respect for judiciary’s sacred role in stabilising the polity through free flow of democratic practices.

According to the governor, the state government has ensured that courts in the state are adequately staffed at all times.

Commissioner for Justice, Mr Charles Ajuyah, said in his opening speech that all legal officers looked forward to improvement in their knowledge and practice skills through development-oriented programme.

He said the programme was designed to update legal officers on current advancement in law and legal practice, and for them to be relevant to society.

Ajuyah said human capital development in the profession had been given statutory backing.
