Auchi Poly celebrates 50 years, holds 22nd convocation

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Dr. Philipa Idogho, has disclosed that the institution was facing challenge of maintaining physical infrastructure, as the polytechnic celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The rector, who disclosed this at the 22nd convocation _ceremony of the polytechnic and its 50th anniversary celebrations, gave the second challenge as the need to expand the institution, which she said led the management to commission a second campus of the polytechnic.

The new campus, according to her, is complete with modern lecture facilities, workshops, studios, e-learning centre, cottage hospital annex, lecture theatre, CEDAP Village, shopping complex and water reticulation. She added that it also houses a library annex, 132 staff offices and 12 classrooms, which are close to completion.Idogho, however pointed out that modern education was computer based, disclosing that the institution’s e-learning centres was equipped to accommodate a combined sitting capacity of 815. She also disclosed that the polytechnic now offers a total of 63 programmes leading to the award of national diploma, higher national diploma and professional diploma in urban and regional planning.

Also speaking, the chairman, governing council of the institution, Gabriel Yomere, noted that Auci Polytechnic is one of the oldest tertiary institutions in Nigeria, but added that its facilities, equipment and instructional materials are as old as the institution itself.

He, therefore, said there was an urgent need to change and replace the equipment and facilities with contemporary ones that meet the requirements of the digital age and the present work environment.

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, in his speech, congratulated the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on the exemplary leadership he has brought into the nation’s education sector, adding that his fresh ideas are helping to stabilise Nigeria’s education system.

Oshiomhole, who was the special guest of honour on the occasion, also congratulated the rector of the polytechnic for transforming the institution, noting that the polytechnic under her watch has become better both in look, content and in its products, and has become better than some other polytechnics and universities in the country.

The governor, however, enjoined the graduating students to join in nation building, saying, “In a digital world, only those who have brains will survive.”
