TWO Urhobo traditional rulers, Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom and Lucky Ararile, Avwaeke I, Ovie of Umiagwha-Abraka Kingdom, have both urged Urhobo to unite and form a common front to end all forms of marginalisation of Urhobo ethnic nationality in Nigeria. The Okpe monarch, Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe kingdom, urged Urhobos to unite, adding that it was difficult to oppress people who are united, just as he called on them to respect their traditional rulers.
The Abraka monarch, Avwaeke I, Ovie of Umiagwhe-Abraka kingdom, on his part stressed that Urhobos are being marginaliged to the extent that they have nobody to run to at national level.
He added that Urhobos are facing marginalisation because they do not love themselves. Both the Orodje of Okpe and the Umiagwhe-Abraka kingdom monarchs spoke in their capacities as chairman, and panelist at the opening ceremony of plenary sessions of the 9th annual conference of the Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) at the Petroleum Training Institute conference hall, Effurun. The Umiagwhe-Abraka monarch expressed sadness that hatred and rivalry among Urhobos are very prominent in the civil service, “where it is difficult to access your fellow Urhobo man”.
