Pensioners restrategise over protest

Edo State chapter of the National Union of Pensioners has suspended its street protest.

The senior citizens made their position known during a meeting between the state government, labour leaders and the union in Benin City.

Speaking on behalf of the State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, the State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Egberanmwen Odubu, assured that the governor will be favourably disposed to all the issues raised in the pensioners demands.

The deputy governor stressed the need for dialogue in dispute situations such as this.

Ademokun, disclosed that the NLC had written to the pensioners to put on hold their street protest for one week to enable them meet with government.

The state NLC chairman said the six per cent and 15 per cent pension increment for the senior citizens had earlier been approved by the governor since April this year. He canvassed that issues of batch 44 and 45 that are pending on the governor’s table be given accelerated approval to alleviate the sufferings of the pensioners.

The State Head of Service, Mr. Jerry Obazele, Commissioner for Establishment and Special Duties, Didi Adodo; the State Chairman of the Joint State Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Shaka Otoide and other key stakeholders were at the meeting.
