The Bayelsa State government has restated its commitment to completion of the Central Senatorial Road from Yenagoa, the capital, to Ukubie on the fringes of the Atlantic Ocean in Southern Ijaw.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor, told newsmen in Yenagoa at the end of his weekly tour of projects that the slight delay on the road project was caused by the rains. His assurance came as some communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area expressed fears that the state government, like previous administrations, would abandon the road.

“The rain is affecting the job. That is why the company trimmed down staff. Our target is not Oporoma, our target is Ukubie. We want to hit the Atlantic on three fronts.

“What we know, we say, and not what we are dreaming of. The people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area should be rest assured that the road will go on,” he said.

Ewhrudjakpor also appealed to landowners and developers on the ongoing AIT-Bayelsa Oil Palm Road project to come out in order to help the contractor to fix kerb stones to avoid breaking the road at will in future.

He explained that most of the projects were aimed at furthering the state government’s plans to diversify the local economy from over-reliance on oil and gas to non-oil sources of revenue.

According to him, the former Deputy Governor’s Lodge on the newly proposed Tourist Island was being converted to a revenue-generating centre in line with the new thinking of government.

Ewhrudjakpor said emphasis was being placed on tourist events and infrastructure as part of efforts to build an enduring tourism brand for the state.
