Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has said the challenge facing the nation’s democracy is basically that of leadership without vision and passion. Okorocha said this while declaring open the 34th National Conference of Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria with theme: “Dealing with the Times and Seasons” at the International Convention Centre, Owerri. The Rescue Mission governor who stressed that it was time for Nigerians to seek leaders with vision rather than engage in the myopic ideology of choosing leaders on the basis of region, religion or party affiliations, he maintained that nationhood and democracy must be protected.
The governor, who rated Nigeria poorly given the national and human resources the country is endowed with, called for deliberate collaboration from every sector to move the nation forward. He pointed out that the numerous challenges facing the country would be a thing of the past if all hands will be on deck in building the unity of Nigeria. In a speech presented by Dr. Steve Ogan, he called for reality check especially on the stability and survival of Nigeria and on the corruption index in Nigeria as he said: “Nigeria now ranks 144 out of 173 corrupt nations, maintaining that corruption “is a monster that will tear the nation apart if not checked”. Ogan reminded lawyers that as ministers of God on assignment to always use their office and position to the glory of God, bearing in mind the times and the seasons they are in. Also, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Imo State, Chukwuma Ma Chukwu Ume, said that though law practice is a profession, yet called on Christian lawyers to see it as a vocation. He urged them to use their position to advocate for the poor, the weak and the persecuted, pointing out the need for them to set aside resources and efforts in doing “Pro bono” cases as show of gratitude to God.
